Redeemer celebrates Dental Week

REA trains for science olympiad
Students in Mrs. Kim Cash and Mrs. Stashia Arthur’s Pre K3 class at Redeemer Episcopal Academy work on various activities designed for Dental Week. Students learned about tooth decay through a science experiment using seashells and various solutions where they predicted and graphed the week’s results.
REA Dental Week

(EATONTON) -- Each Friday at Redeemer Episcopal Academy, the Pre K3 class participates in fun and educational science projects that coincide with a weekly lesson.  Recently, the class celebrated Dental Health Week by learning ways to care for teeth, how to floss and what to eat.

This week’s experiment demonstrated and explained tooth decay.  Seashells took the place of teeth and each shell was placed in a solution- water, coke, vinegar, salt water, and sugar water.  On Monday, the students gave their predictions on what would happen to the shell. Each day the class would record the observations made by completing a graph. On Friday, the students were able to see if their predictions were correct by checking the results of the experiment.  The students took control of this experiment and were able to make the appropriate connections of which solutions were harmful to teeth.

REA’s K3 class also welcomed an informative visitor from the Lake Oconee Center for Dental Health, who spoke to the children about the correct way to care for their teeth and the importance of dental health.  After the visit, the students participated in one last experiment.  Previously, the students were given eggs to place in coffee, soda and water.  Then, the eggs were removed and the children noticed the stains on two of the three eggs.  They were able to use the brushing techniques demonstrated earlier, with the use of toothpaste, to remove the stains from the eggs.
